Penderyn Llandudno Transformation Bitumen Removal
Transforming an old school in to a distillery!
One of the most striking and cherished features of the Penderyn Llandudno Lloyd St Distillery is its beautifully restored original woodblock parquet flooring. Dating back to the building’s origins in 1881 — when it served as the Old Board School — the parquet flooring has been meticulously preserved as part of a wider heritage restoration project.
During the transformation of the former school into a modern distillery and visitor centre, the parquet blocks were carefully lifted from the floors and shipped to Parquet Bitumen Removal in Cheshire, a specialist company, where the old bitumen adhesive was professionally removed. Once cleaned and restored, the blocks were returned to Llandudno and expertly refitted, preserving their original layout and character.
This traditional parquet woodblock flooring now spans several key areas of the distillery, including the Exhibition Room, Tasting Bar, and Masterclass spaces It's warm tones and timeless herringbone pattern provide not only visual elegance but also a tangible link to the building’s Victorian past.
The restoration team took great care to maintain architectural authenticity throughout the space. Alongside the parquet floors, original features such as wall tiles, steel banisters, and strong timber roof beams strong were conserved, blending heritage charm with the distillery’s modern identity.
Today, the parquet flooring plays a central role in shaping the atmosphere of Penderyn Llandudno. It sets the tone for a warm, character-rich visitor experience where craftsmanship, tradition, and innovation come together — much like the whisky produced on site.
